I had to admit to being skeptical. Could the new Sky-Watcher SynScan telescopes really work? Up to now, mating a high-tech GoTo computer system to a Dobsonian-style reflector required kits costing thousands of dollars. Such a combination makes for a dream telescope, to be sure, delivering lots of aperture, practical portability and the convenience of automatic tracking and push-button object finding. Few GoTo scopes can do this. Setup is very easy. Unless you use the optional GPS module, you do need to enter your location once it remembers it even after powering downthen enter the date and time each night.

After that, you aim the telescope at one star by manually and electrically slewing it to a star either you or the system chooses of necessity, you do have to be able to identify bright stars. Centre the star with the slew buttons, hit Enter, and you are aligned.

Other than ensuring that the telescope is reasonably level on solid ground, there are no special setup requirements.

Another feature that worked fine was the Park Telescope command. The well-honed SynScan software proved bug- and crash-free.

The solar system database contains the Moon and all the planets yes, Pluto toobut alas, no comets or asteroids. There is a nice selection of double and variable stars and a place to store 25 user-defined objects. The hand controller comes with an RS cable for connecting to an external computer. Having an interactive star chart in your hands to match the eyepiece field is wonderful for exploring fields of galaxies. Computers and motors take power. While it lasted longer, it was too big to ride along with the telescope.

Thus I discovered a function missing from the software: Anti-Cord Wrap. The telescope always takes the shortest route from object to object, so I did find it wrapping the power cord around its base, to the point where it pulled the plug on me one night. Images snapped into precise focus. Saturn showed crisp detail, and when the seeing allowed, close double stars were cleanly resolved. Sliding the tube up and down did not seem to compromise the collimation.

When placed on a solid surface, the telescope was stable and dampened down in just one second from normal bumping and handling.

The only proviso is that while the telescope can be used as a normal push-around Dobsonian, the additional friction of the axes particularly in azimuth required for the motor mechanism makes the scope a little stiff and hard to move in small increments.The driver can control any mount controllable by Synscan hand controller, it offers basic GoTo capability and parking. After you connect to the USB port, a device port will be created e. When running the driver for the first time, go to the Connection tab and select the port to connect to. First change mode to Sync, then enter the desired coordinates then press Set. Users will seldom use this interface directly since many clients e. KStars can slew and sync the mount directly from the sky map without having to enter any coordinates manually.

Under the options tab, you can configure many parameters before and after you connect to the mount. If a dome is used in conjunction with the mount, a policy can be set if parking the mount or dome can interfere with the safety of either. The default policy is to ignore the dome. Time and Locaiton settings are configured in the Site Management tab. These settings are usually set automatically by the client and do not need to be set manually by the user.

You can park the telescope by clicking on Park. Firstly, you may be surprised that I said I chose this scope for astrophotography but I will explain it later. I was thinking about the version on the equatorial mount, but because the view of the Polaris is obstructed from my main observing location, I had to go for altazimuth mount. Of course, the other reason was that it is a great telescope, and it fulfilled my requirement for a GoTo mount. The telescope is a Newtonian reflector design and has a very nice black optical tube assembly OTA with a sparkling silver finish. I like reflector telescopes a lot; They are affordable with a big aperture. This OTA has mm aperture and mm focal length. It means that the image you will see is brighter, plus the faint deep sky objects are visible.

Some of them are really big in the sky, sometimes few times the diameter of the full moon. Also, the primary mirror is parabolic which is the most important thing regarding the optics of this OTA. Cheap Newtonians usually have a spherical mirror which suffers from spherical aberration.

Better scopes are using a parabolic mirror. The secondary mirror is mounted on 0. The focuser is another highlight of this telescope. It is much higher quality compared to other scopes in the same price range. It was another reason why I repurchased this telescope.

The adjusting wheels for the focus are much bigger than on standard focusers which allows you to make fine focus adjustments. They are made of aluminum with a rubber cover for better grip. The final useful thing on the focuser is the focusing lock. It is only a locking screw which you tighten up after you reach the perfect focus, and it will hold it for you the whole night. This finderscope is a small telescope with a crosshair that is helping you to find objects on the night sky.

Additionally, the SynScan hand controller has the ability to select up to 8 different exposure combinations. Thanks to the pier extension that sits between the mount head and tripod, the AZ-EQ5 can be polar aligned at almost any latitude. Most equatorial mounts have difficulty with polar alignment at lower latitudes due to the counterweight bar interfering with the tripod.

This is more than adequate for numerous deep-sky astrophotography configurations using a telescope. I have a small 50mm guide scope and guide camera riding on top of the refractor, adding another 2 lbs.

This is an ideal deep-sky imaging setup for larger deep-sky targets such as nebulae and larger galaxies. In the world of astrophotography, it is best to keep the total overall of your imaging gear well below the maximum payload capacity of your telescope mount. Although the telescope mount is rated at 30 lbs, deep-astrophotography at long focal lengths requires ultra-precise tracking.

Personally, I recommend using a refractor telescope if you plan on imaging galaxies and nebulae with this mount. At this focal length, you can expect to capture pin-point stars in unguided images of up to 3-minutes, and much longer with the help of autoguiding.
