The engine coolant temperature sensor is responsible for sending the temperature of the engine to the DME and the instrument cluster. It is a four wire sensor, with two separate circuits, one for the instrument cluster and one for the DME. If you have a coolant sensor fault code stored in your DME and your engine isn't running right, I suggest replacing the sensor before digging too deep. You may also have an inaccurate temperature gauge in your instrument cluster.
This can also be from a faulty sensor. In this article, I'll go over the steps involved with replacing and testing the engine coolant temp sensor on the BMW X5 with an M62 8-cylinder engine.
Be sure to work with a cool engine. The coolant temp sensor is located at the front center of the engine on the left side of the throttle housing yellow arrow.
Large Image Extra-Large Image. First we have to remove the intake air duct that runs from the throttle housing yellow arrow to the mass air flow sensor green arrow. Working at the fresh air intake, remove four plastic rivets green arrows. Use a pair of pliers inset to remove the center rivet. Once all the center rivets have been removed, pull the duct up to detach from the vehicle. Then lift the duct up on the left side while detaching it from the duct green arrow on the right side.
Working at the mass air flow sensor, loosen the hose clamp using a flathead screwdriver green arrow. Working at the throttle housing duct, loosen the hose clamp using a flathead screwdriver green arrow. Next, you will have to rotate the throttle-housing duct up toward the left side of the vehicle in the direction of the green arrow.
This will detach it from the mass air flow sensor. Once the duct is detached from the mass air flow sensor, pull the duct off the throttle housing. There are two small hoses you have to disconnect in the following step. Be careful not to damage them during this step. Working at the bottom of the intake air duct, detach the plastic line by squeezing the release collar green arrows while pulling the line off the duct.
Then pull the vacuum hose yellow arrow straight off the duct to remove it. Replacing Coolant Sensor: Then, disconnect the sensor electrical connector by pulling it straight off the sensor.
The connector is held on by two small tabs. If they will not release, use a small flathead screwdriver to release them. Replacing Coolant Sensor: Now you can loosen the sensor. Use a 22mm open end wrench green arrow and loosen the sensor about a half turn. This should be enough to remove it by hand the remainder of the way. If you have a 22m deep socket, it can be used to remove the sensor as well yellow arrow.
Replacing Coolant Sensor: Place a drain pan under the left front of your engine. To find a BMW Center, try a new search or visit one of the locations by expanding the list results below. The sensor monitors coolant temperature as it leaves the radiator. The sensor reading is used by the DME to determine when the electric cooling fan is activated. The sensor can fail electrically.
A fault code will be stored and the MIL malfunction indicator lamp will be illuminated. The radiator outlet temperature sensor might be the cause of a hard to find coolant leak. The sensor is mounted in a plastic section of the right side radiator hose.
There is a sealing O-ring that normally prevents leaks in the system. Over time, this O-ring fails and creates a coolant leak. At first, it will be a small leak and you may notice a small amount of coolant under the right side of your vehicle or the coolant reservoir coolant level slowly dropping. If you have a small, yet hard to locate coolant leak, start by inspecting this sensor. If it's in your budget, replace the lower radiator hose also as preventative maintenance.
Replacing the radiator outlet temperature sensor is a snap and can be done working above the engine on the right side of the radiator. Lift and support the front of the vehicle safely. Remove the engine splash shield.
See our tech article on splash shield removing. Drain the cooling system. See our tech article on draining and filling your cooling system. Remove the radiator cooling fan. See our tech article on radiator cooling fan replacing. This step can be optional, as I have been able to sneak sensors in and out without removing the fan. It is a tight fit, but if you have small arms, you should be able to make it happen. On models with automatic transmissions, it is even more difficult to do without removing the fan, as the cooler blocks access to the sensor. These problems result mainly from poor combustion, which stifles the engine.
So before replacing your engine parts, try Carbon Cleaning. A dirty engine as the result of carbon deposits is the new threat to vehicle performance.
It changes resistance with the temperature. The Coolant Temperature sensor is critical to many PCM functions such as fuel injection, ignition timing, variable valve timing, and transmission shifting. Decarbonization allows to clean effectively your engine. Make your online diagnosis. Symptoms of a Bad Coolant Temperature Sensor If your vehicle starts to use a lot more gasoline than usual, or black smoke is starting to come from the exhaust pipe, these are indicators that the coolant temperature sensor in your vehicle could be defective, and needs to be replaced.
If you start having trouble starting your vehicle after it has reached its normal operating temperature, this is usually a very good sign that you need to have the coolant temperature sensor checked. To confirm, you could run your vehicle through an emissions test. If everything else is in order, failure in this test should be because of a faulty coolant temperature sensor.
Another telltale sign of your coolant temperature sensor not functioning properly is if your engine is overheating frequently. This can possibly happen when the coolant is leaking, causing the temperature sensor to behave erratically.
In many vehicles, a faulty coolant temperature system will trigger a check engine light or service engine light on your car's dashboard. A quick trip to a qualified mechanic with a diagnostic computer will tell you if the check engine light has anything to do with a coolant temperature sensor or not.
Engine Coolant Temperature Sensors replacement Most coolant temperature sensors are not replaced unless they have failed. A coolant sensor that is shorted, open or reading out of range obviously can't provide a reliable temperature signal and must be replaced for the engine management system to function properly.
But many experts also recommend installing a new coolant sensor if you are replacing or rebuilding an engine. Because coolant sensors can deteriorate with age and may not read as accurately as they did when they were new. Installing a new sensor can eliminate a lot of potential problems down the road. It is also a good idea to replace the coolant sensor and thermostat if the engine has experienced a case of severe overheating.
Abnormally high engine temperatures can damage these components and may cause them to misbehave or fail prematurely. Replacing a coolant sensor requires draining some of the coolant from the cooling system. You do not have to drain the entire radiator. Just open the drain valve and let out enough coolant so the coolant level in the engine is below the sensor.
This would be a good time to check the condition of the coolant, and to replace it if the coolant is more than three years old conventional coolant or five years old long life coolant. A coolant change and a flush would also be a good idea if the coolant shows any signs of contamination. The threads on the coolant sensor may be pre-coated with sealer to prevent coolant leaks. Tighten the sensor carefully to prevent damage. Once the new sensor has been installed, you can refill the cooling system.
Make sure all the air is out of the cooling system. Air trapped under the thermostat may cause the engine to overheat or the coolant sensor to not read correctly. Find a center. Our centers worldwide. The roads in Iceland were far better than I had envisioned.

Alabama-Mississippi State in Starkville represents a rare top 25 matchup in this series, and that may not bode well for coach Dan Mullen (more on that later). Alabama (9-0) boasts a 30-game regular-season winning streak. But after watching its best defensive players drop like flies last week in a less-than-inspiring win against LSU, the Tide look vulnerable.
So Bama can crowd the line of scrimmage, force third-and-long, get the ball back to its offense early and often and win by strangulation. How Mississippi State can win: Win at the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball. Score in the low 20s, avoid giving up big, explosive plays downfield and perhaps the crowd in Starkville can witness a historic win.
The Tide failed to cover the spread vs. Florida State became a terrible team. Bama has yet to face Georgia, Auburn or Mississippi State. The week after a huge game against LSU, normally this would be a let-down spot for Alabama.
But this 2017 Alabama team tends to play its best after mediocre outings. After a 41-23 win against Colorado State, the Tide annihilated Vanderbilt, 59-0, and Ole Miss, 66-3. Mississippi State is next in this ledger after a mediocre game in Week 10. And a road game against a ranked SEC team will have the full attention of these players and the coaching staff. Not to worry, as the Tide will roll out a swarm of 5-star backups. Saban squashes run-first, defense-first opponents like bugs.
Running quarterbacks sometimes have success against Bama. But Saban holds a distinct coaching advantage here. Hurts has protected the football very well this season. Backup Tua Tagovailoa is a much better downfield passer. That makes sense, considering the Bulldogs average 46. But the one-dimensional offense that relies on efficiency, long drives and wearing down opponents managed a combined 13 points against Auburn and Georgia.
Alabama fields a similar defense. That could be trouble Saturday. Mississippi State just played UMass, and actually trailed at halftime.
The Bulldogs offense scored just 20 points and gave up 7 to the Minutemen defense. Perhaps Mississippi State was looking ahead to Alabama. Fitzgerald is a gem of a runner. Nick Fitzgerald, a good offensive line and a deep backfield will help Mississippi State occasionally succeed against a wounded Bama defense. Expect Alabama to dominate field position, intercept a few passes and squeeze the life out of the cowbell-toting crowd in the second half.
I also love the under here, and made the total 44 when I handicapped the game. More than likely there will be bets and odds available for The International 2017.
